Grout is porous and so easily absorb grease, dirt and lime scale. Drink or grease spillages on the floor will cause marks and patches in the joints in the floor. Grout between wall-tiles, particularly in damp areas like bathrooms, will become dirty and unattractive as a result of Mould, Mildew and Limescale. Yellow, orange and pink stains can discolor the grout in bath or shower areas due to continued use of acid formulated shampoos and soaps.
How To clean the grout:
1. If you are cleaning the grout between ceramic floor tiles - many stains are on the surface of the grout and can be removed with sandpaper. Just fold the sandpaper into a crease, and work it back and forth along the grout line. If sandpaper doesn't work, you may have better results by applying a pencil eraser.
2. For more stubborn stains - spray on a commercial grout cleaner or a heavy-duty all-purpose cleaning solution with bleach. Wait for several minutes. (Longer if stains are stubborn). Do not use bleach on colored grout.
3. Scrub the grout with a stiff scrub brush or a grout brush, then rinse thoroughly.
4. Dry with a white towel or paper towels.
5. To protect the grout use a grout sealer product.
6. If bleach doesn't do the job, you may need to remove and replace the grout. Use a grout-removal tool or a rotary tool with a carbide tip. After you install new grout, seal it with a grout sealer to reduce the likelihood of future stains setting in. Reapply sealer once every two years.
Remember to wear rubber gloves and keep the room well ventilated while cleaning.
Marble tile cleaning
Do not use vinegar or any acid products on marble floor tiles. Use only warm water on marble tiles. Dry afterwards with a towel as marble floors spot easily.
Plastic tile cleaning
Wash the tiles with a solution of vinegar and water. Polish with a towel.
Ceramic tile cleaning
Cleaning Ceramic Tile floors is relatively easy:
1. Always vacuum or dust hard floor surfaces before mopping.
2. Clean ceramic tiles with warm water only. Prevention becomes essential with these floor surfaces. Regularly apply a sealant found in tile stores to slate, tile and also the ceramic tile grout.
3. Clean spills immediately.
Tips:
- Use mats to protect ceramic floor tiles. Mats protect the tiles from dirt and grit, sand and oil.
- Add protective pads to furniture to protect your ceramic tiles by affixing felt or similar pads to the legs of any metal, iron, wood, or plastic furniture.
- Do not use scouring powders or other abrasives which can scratch the finish.
- Rust stains on tile can be removed with kerosene.
